Served in 1961 at Wakkanai Japan, and 1963 in Hof Germany, not as wild as some of the other USAFSS sites. We did have freedom to mix with the locals, we did have chow halls, we did have some recreation. I started the Photo club, Electronics Hobby club, and the Bowling league in Hof. I also was the DMV and issued motorcycle driver’s licenses and ticket. (DUI was the immediate loss of your license)

My primary job was to take care of the SLA equipment and antennas and supervise other techs in our team. Secondary was when the new GLR system was being constructed, I doubled as the guardian of the inventory. (Note, been a long time, I believe the SLA and GLR are correct, but age and memory may be .. well.

I was there 05-64 to 08-66 as a 29450. We were in vans connected outside of the communication center. We had a 40 foot parabolic dish to monitor the USSR space program. Would love to sit with you for a long conversation. If I’m in the area, I will definitely stop I. Thank you for your service.

In reply to Ron Benjamin. Silent Warrior 1966-1970 like Bill I scored very high on selected test. Followed his path in basic and tech school. I was assigned to the 6917th San Vito semi remote Flr-9 radar. Intercept Operator Russia.

In reply to CHARLES WARREN JR. I served in Peshawar for 15 months 1965 - 1966 in the 2008 Comm Sqd. in support of 6937th as an Crypto tech. In comparison we lived in luxury. We had a theatre. The biggest incident was India was in a short war dropping bombs on Peshawar

Bill, it is always good to hear about other silent warriors. I had great duty at the 6917th in Brindisi and the 6931st on Iraklion Crete. I read in your article you live in Transylvania County. I live not too far away in Pickens County. I understand there is a great military museum near you. I hope to visit there soon.

Proud of you bill I had a lot better with the 6910 rgm in Germany from 1955 to1959. My AFscs were 20150, 20250, and 20330. I wood glady serve again..

Proud of you Bill. I started a 15-month tour with the 6937th (Charlie Trick)–arriving in Nov 1960. Many, many memories, including the Outdoor Movies; a bowling alley, Gym, and we built a swimming pool while I was there. Got to shop a little in Kabul; and taught basketball to the kids in the Badaber Village. My family knew where I was, but not what I was doing, even when they were involved in the background checks.
